Funny, I almost neglect Linus 'till the moment I've accidentally stomped around his reply on that git/C++ topic. Lot of sober talk, I must say. Now it's my favorite #2 (after Glenn Reid's 'www.xmlsucks.com'). Respect!

C++ adds a lot of complexity with implicitly called constructors and destructors, and anybody that thinks it helps with memory leaks has never tried to debug a large C++ program vs. a large C program. C++ doesn't help in this area, it hurts. Code re-use in C++ is also a problem. Reusing entire libraryies is fine (in both C and C++) but using less than entire libraries, (e.g. cutting and pasting hunks of code from one program into another) C wins. C++ code tends to be tightly integrated with class definitions, which almost invariable depend on other class definitions, and when you try to reuse the code you find yourself either hauling in a whole network of inextricalbe classes and header files, or else just viewing the code as psuedo code, and rewriting it with the code as a guideline. C++ adds a layer of complexity on top of the complexity already intrinsically present in the problem you're trying to solve. Sometimes, if things map well this can be worth it, resulting in a nice interface. Too often, it's just a layer of needless, utterly invented complexity, on top of the intrinsic complexity of the problem.

On top of all this, C++ is immature. The STL and Boost libraries are constantly changing (still!) and if you have to support old OSes, etc. Good luck with getting all your compilers to agree. And that, C++, that is just freakin' bush league. Get your act together, C++.

More often than not, I've so far found C++ to be the cause of more trouble than it saves.

Marele-ntuneric, vei vedea.

Numai bine,
